The Solution to the Primary Stalemate

Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 01:50:10 PM PDT

I have a proposal for a surefire solution to the Democratic primary stalemate.

We know that there is virtually no way that Hillary Clinton can win.

But we also know that as long as there is an infinitesmal chance of her winning, she will do pretty much anything it takes, which at this point means destroying Obama and virtually ensuring a McCain presidency.

Hillary Clinton's entire adult life has pretty much been a prelude to her running for President.

Bill Clinton owes her too much let this thing go easily, and having tasted power, he longs for the taste again.

Unless...perhaps there is a significant counter-offer that could be made?

Maybe there could be a way that Hillary would actually gain something significant by backing down? Which would make it worth her while?

Enter Theresa Heinz Kerry, George Soros, Harry Reid, and Warren Buffet.

From Heinz Kerry, Soros, and Buffet: 100 billions dollars, cash, either payable directly to the Clintons, or to the Clinton foundation.   If Bill (and now Hillary)want to be seen as world class philanthropists, a 100 billion dollar foundation would certainly do the trick, and allow them do things which would put some of the luster back on their historical reputation.

On the other hand, if they are just after raw money and power, 100 billion dollars should take them well on the way there.  Indeed, there are few people in this world who would find it easy to turn down 100 billion dollars, especially people, like the Clintons, who are keenly aware of its value.

From Harry Reid: a guarantee of support for Hillary Clinton's ascent to the position of Senate majority leader, either immediately after the 2008 election, or in 2010.  I know many of us might question Hillary Clinton's bonafides for such a position after her conduct (and political skills) in this election, but I think it would be a preferable alternative to the self-immolation of the Democratic party when it should be on the verge of a historic victory.

The contours of the ultimate solution might be somewhat different than these proposals, but I think ultimately some sort of horse-trading among these lines will be necessary to defuse this conflict, allow Hillary to save some face, and bring the party back together.
