Just how popular is Barack Obama in Canada? Pretty damn popular.
In Canada, the Liberals and the Conservatives have been fairly close the polls for the last few years, producing two minority governments (with both parties lacking a majority in the parliament).
But what if the Canadian Liberal party was led by Barack Obama instead of its current leader? According to the poll:
As a Liberal, Obama would boost that party's support relative to the Conservatives, 33 per cent to 18.
And if Obama was the leader of the Conservative Party, instead of current Prime Minister Stephen Harper, what would happen?
As a Tory, Obama would boost relative support compared to the Liberals, 32 per cent to 15.
And what do these numbers mean?
Harris-Decima president Bruce Anderson says when you combine the poll with current voting intentions, either party would win a landslide victory with Obama.
There seems to be at least one aspect of the poll which could have resonance on this side of the border as well:
Anderson says the poll points both to Obama's widespread, non-ideological appeal in Canada[...]
One of Obama's greatest strengths as the next Democratic nominee is his appeal to moderate conservatives (republicans). The genius of Obama is his ability to speak to progressive ideals in a way that is not threatening even to conservatives, and rather draws them in. Even when the conservatives are north of the border.
