From the Orlando Sentinel:
Andrew Gillum conceded that he lost the governor’s race Tuesday night, but the election could be headed for a state-mandated recount anyway.
Additional votes counted on Wednesday afternoon had cut Republican Ron DeSantis’ lead over the Democratic mayor of Tallahassee to 0.62 percent.
An automatic recount would be done if the margin of victory falls below 0.5 percent.
There is currently a .6 percentage point gap between Gillum and DeSantis in the vote count, and a .4 point gap between Senator Bill Nelson and Gov. Rick Scott in the Senate Race. Nelson has demanded a recount in that race. If Nelson thinks a recount could show that he won, wouldn’t a recount be similarly beneficial in the Gillum DeSantis race, which nearly as close?
Disclaimer: It is probably quite statistically unlikely that, even in the case of a recount, the end result would change, and Gillum still would need to make up .1 percentage point in the uncounted vote for the law to kick in at all.
But an added level of review to the results of this hardly fought election would be something which would only inure to the public benefit.
